The Brazilian blow-dry is the hairstyle that's turning heads worldwide. But few women in Britain realise it has also sparked a major health scare.

While governments around the globe have sounded alarm bells over the treatment, in Britain the authorities' response has been lukewarm at best.

One of the blow-dry's main ingredients is formaldehyde, a pungent gas which is used to bind the protein keratin to the hair, resulting in poker-straight locks.

Widely used to manufacture building products, in liquid form formaldehyde is also used as an embalming fluid.

But Canadian authorities declared the chemical a toxic substance as far back as 1999.

It is banned for some uses in Europe and the International Agency for Research on Cancer has declared it a known carcinogen — or cancer-causing substance.

Yet British lawyer Karen Jackson — of legal firm Roberts Jackson, who specialise in dealing with industrial diseases — says: "Here there have been no official warnings about the use of these kinds of treatments, despite alerts issued in the US and Europe."

In America the Department of Health and Human Services has added formaldehyde to its list of carcinogens and advised avoiding exposure to it.

Earlier this year American health authorities issued a hazard alert to salon owners and workers about the risk of using the chemical.

Now it has been branded "dangerous" by the US Food and Drug Administration who have issued a warning that many Brazilian blow-dry products — even those labelled "formaldehyde free" — can contain methylene glycol. This is simply formaldehyde dissolved in water, which can release the gas into the air.

A-list fans of the style include Liz Hurley Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie.

Yet there have been hundreds of complaints by US stylists complaining of allergic reactions after carrying out Brazilian blow-dries.

In the US the makers of Brazilian Blowout — the country's top-selling brand — are facing legal action by 200 people who say the product has damaged their health. Although Canada banned it in 2010, the manufacturers are continuing to maintain it is safe.

In Britain Emma Meredith, of trade body the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association, said: "The CTPA issued an information sheet about the Brazilian blow-dry a year ago because we were concerned about what was coming to light about the product.

"It was being marketed as a totally natural and chemical-free treatment, but there is no such thing as chemical-free."

At Fabulous Hair Salon in East London they are doing a roaring trade in Brazilian blow-dries.

Stylist Nikki Henderson says: "They are hugely popular, as they can really tame frizzy hair. But we only use formaldehyde-free solution in our salon."

How it works
THE Brazilian blow-dry is hailed as miraculous by women who hate their frizzy hair. It calms tangled locks, leaving hair shiny, sleek and perfectly straight for up to four months.

Created in Brazil six years ago, the technique uses "natural" products such as the protein keratin. A solution is put on to the hair, then sealed in with extra-hot hair straighteners.

But one of the other main ingredients of the blow-dry is the chemical formaldehyde, which is used to bind the keratin to the hair — and which is causing the worldwide concern.

Potential dangers
US studies of mortuary workers using high levels of formaldehyde have shown raised incidence of a rare kind of nasal cancer.

Among reactions reported by stylists doing Brazilian blow-dries are hair loss, blisters, rashes, blistered scalps, dizziness, vomiting, mouth ulcers, eye irritations and breathing problems. Experts say there are also fears that if absorbed into the scalp the chemical can affect the growth of new hair.

Brit lawyer Karen Jackson says: "Beauty is not worth this level of risk."

EU rules state that Brazilian blow-dry hair solution must contain less than 0.2 per cent formaldehyde to be considered safe.

But in the US some straightening treatments have been found using 50 times this amount.

And there are fears here that some beauty salons are ignoring the warnings and continuing to use unsafe products.

Last year the EU issued warnings about four straightening treatments used in the UK — Brazilian Blowout, Coppola, Global Keratin and KeraStraight.

They should have been cleared from store shelves but earlier this year trading standards officials found they were still being used in salons all over the UK.

Sugaring has been around since the days of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece but it's only recently that this form of hair removal has grown in popularity. If you're not familiar with the concept of sugaring, here's your essential guide for what to expect if you're interested in having a go yourself.

What is Sugaring?Sugaring isn't too dissimilar to waxing but uses a mixture of sugar, lemon and water rather than hot wax. You can use sugaring to remove hair on most areas of the body but it can be especially useful for removing hair along the bikini line (that could be too painful to remove through waxing) and fine facial hair. Generally speaking, if it involves an area of the body that is more than a bit sensitive, sugaring can be good alternative to the likes of waxing, and longer-lasting in comparison to shaving or hair removal creams.

The Advantages of Using Sugaring for Hair RemovalBecause sugaring uses different ingredients to waxing, it can have several plus points in its favour.

Here are some of the main benefits of sugaring:
Remove shorter hairs: With sugaring, you can tackle hairs that are just one-eighth of an inch so unlike waxing, you don't have to wait around for hairs to reach a certain length before you can remove them. This is one of the most attractive benefits of sugaring, as there is less re-growth between sugaring sessions.

Less painful: Whereas hot wax comes into contact with the skin as well as the hair that you're looking to remove, sugaring coats the hairs themselves so it's much less likely to make your eyes water.

Less irritation: As the sugar paste isn't heated to the same degree as hot wax, it's kinder to your skin if it does get on your skin. It's also more natural and doesn't contain chemicals so there's less chance of irritation or a bad reaction.
Less messy: The sugar paste is easily dissolved by water so it's not difficult to clean off once you're done.

How Difficult is Sugaring?The most challenging part of the sugaring process is creating the right mix between the sugar, lemon and water, especially in the early days. A typical sugaring paste uses:
1/4 cup of water
¼ cup of lemon juice
2 cups of white sugar

Mix these ingredients together and heat until the paste takes on a smooth and syrup-like consistency. You can do this more quickly in the microwave but because of the risk of overheating the sugar mixture, you may prefer to heat on the stove instead. Once you've achieved the desired result, leave to cool before you even think about starting the sugaring process. When it's time to apply the paste to your body, it's a good idea to heat it up slightly to make it easier to use.

How to Go About SugaringAs well as the ingredients to make the paste, you'll also need to have a spatula to apply it and some fine cotton or paper strips to hand for removal purposes. Make sure that the sugar paste is warm but not unbearably hot, as this will make it easier to spread without burning your skin. Spread the sugaring paste thinly in the direction of the hair growth, apply the cotton or paper strip over the top and pull off in the opposite direction to the hair growth.

What to Expect After SugaringThere will still be some degree of irritation and redness after sugaring, although it should be less in comparison to waxing. On average, this won't last for more than a few hours.

Behind the Brand: L'Oreal

It is the biggest beauty company in the world and owns numerous ethical brands including The Body Shop and Pureology, but do its own ethics stand up to close scrutiny?

In July this year, the UK advertising standards authority, the ASA, ruled that an ad for Maybelline’s ‘Eraser’ foundation was misleading. The Photoshopping of model Christie Turlington had given the impression that the make-up had a bigger transformative effect than it was really capable of. As a result, the ad won't be shown again in its current form in the UK. If ethical campaigners had their way then Maybelline’s parent company, French cosmetics giant L’Oréal, would also be banned but this time from shelves across the country. The reason? L’Oréal’s continued testing of some of its products on animals and because of criticisms made about Switzerland’s Nestlé, a 30 per cent shareholder in L’Oréal, over its marketing of baby formula in the developing world.

Both claims are complex and contested. They also present a major headache for consumers who pride themselves on their ethical principles because they raise a question that is likely to become increasingly important in coming years. If we disapprove of the ethics of major corporations, should we boycott all of their brands?

This is particularly difficult in the case of L’Oréal, the biggest cosmetics company in the world. Their brands include everything from high-street fixture The Body Shop to the 100 per cent vegan haircare brand Pureology by way of ‘natural’ supermarket staple Garnier. The company also holds the license to make perfumes and cosmetics for high-end brands, including Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and Diesel. Quitting your L’Oréal habit could be harder than you thought. How strong, though is the case against the company?

L’Oréal’s most outspoken critic is UK animal welfare campaigner Naturewatch, which since 2006 has called for a boycott of all L’Oréal products including those sold by The Body Shop. The company still uses animal testing extensively, Naturewatch claims, despite assertions that it has not tested any of its finished products on animals since 1989.

The devil, as they say is in the details. In 2009, L’Oréal published a report on its sustainable practices, which repeated the claim that it does not test finished products on animals. The problem is that as one of the world’s biggest cosmetics firms, much of its work is in the development of new ingredients for its products, and it is here that Naturewatch’s problems arise. EU legislation actually demands that all new cosmetic ingredients be tested on animals, although from 2009 onwards it has been working with cosmetics firms to eradicate the use of animal testing by 2013.

‘L’Oréal has not used animals to test its finished products since 1989, except in the case where national legislation requires it,’ the cosmetics giant said in its sustainability report. ‘This is the case in certain countries where L’Oréal operates and in those locations regulations require testing using animals before substances can be registered for commercial use. As L’Oréal operates on an international scale, it is obliged to comply with the current national legislation for products that are manufactured locally and sold locally.’

L’Oréal argues that it is a world leader in researching alternatives to animal testing, including the development of artificial tissue on which it has spent €600m to date It is also a founder member of the European Partnership for Alternatives to Animal Testing and closely involved in the international Tox Cast initiative which is run by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Rather than a cruel advocate of animal testing, it says, it is in fact fully engaged in attempting to make the practice obsolete.

The owner of one ethical skincare firm told the Ecologist that companies like L’Oréal do face a tough set of choices; either innovate in order to maintain their market share, or use existing ingredients and allow less ethical competitors to launch new products, or continue developing within the limits of regional legislation. Smaller producers can simply find green or ethical ways to produce established ingredients. Few ethical firms could afford to pay for the necessary research on artificial tissues that L’Oréal has done, he adds - at current exchange rates, €600m is not far off the £652m it paid for The Body Shop in 2007.

Meanwhile, the Nestlé issue also remains hotly disputed. In 1977, the company was accused of using its marketing campaigns in developing countries to promote the idea that its baby formula was better for infants than breast milk. Since then, a series of campaigns have been run to highlight the company’s practices abroad, particularly by the International Baby Food Action Network [IBFAN], which continues to call for a boycott of Nestlé’s products worldwide. In May 2011, IBFAN claimed that Nestlé had broken 130 rules set down by the World Health Organisation for the promotion of infant formulas in the developing world.

For its part, Nestlé says that it does not question the fact that breastfeeding is the best start a baby can have in life, and claims to work hard to meet the WHO’s rigorous standards. In corporate literature it describes its baby food as being part of a process of ‘complementary feeding,’ which is crucial to babies’ development. It also claims to distribute educational material to healthcare professionals in the developing world advocating breastfeeding, although as the IFBAN points out, it also advertises its formulas to these professionals using similar language.

Working out where you stand on these criticisms is down to individual ethics, and they are both complex and contentious issues and among a number that have been levelled at both firms. In Nestlé’s case in particular, the company has certainly acted in an ethically suspect manner in the past, while L’Oréal itself, through choice or not, is certainly spending big to quit its animal testing habit.

If you do decide that L’Oréal and Nestlé are acting in an unethical manner then the next big question is: should brands like The Body Shop or Pureology be punished for the sins of the parent company?

The founders of both firms have strong ethical principles, and sold their companies so that their message could reach a wider market, making it a tough choice in both cases. Buying their products may line the pockets of their L’Oréal and Nestlé paymasters, but by buying from The Body Shop, which does not test any of its products on animals, or vegan Pureology, you could also be sending a message to the guys at the top: more of the good ethical products, less of the morally questionable.

Given that many big corporations are now spending more and more on big, ethical brands - Coca Cola, for example, now owns the UK’s Innocent, while another US giant, Kraft, has Green and Blacks chocolate - this is a problem which is unlikely to go away for the ethical consumer any time soon.

Answer: Yes, I have just the thing. Not too long ago, a friend of mine took a nasty spill while riding her bicycle. She shared the details of what happened with me, and today, I will share her story with you. My friend's next-door neighbor asked politely how she was doing after the minor accident, and she confessed to her neighbor that everything hurt.
"I have just the thing," the neighbor responded and dunked inside her house, emerging a moment later with a jar of calendula cream. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is an herb that has been used safely all over the world for centuries, specifically for wound healing.

My friend decided to give her neighbor's cream a try, since she trusted the source. She trusted her because the lady had raised five teenagers who played every sport from soccer to volleyball. If this stuff came with the soccer mom's seal of approval, it had to be effective.

As my friend relayed her story to me, I became excited to write about it too, since there are no prescription drugs or salves that do all that Calendula can. My friend dabbed the cream on her bruises and scrapes, took a nap and woke up significantly better. Within days, she was as good as new.

Aqueous Creams Make Eczema Worse

Although aqueous cream has been prescribed for millions of sufferers from childhood, it is the first time research has been carried out on an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS).

Previously it was thought the ‘stinging’ sensation affecting half of users was due to a preservative or antiseptic in the cream. In a study by Bath University researchers, aqueous cream reduced the thickness of healthy skin in volunteers by more than 10 per cent in just four weeks and water loss was increased.

Professor Richard Guy, professor of pharmaceutical sciences at Bath, said the remedy was likely to aggravate the dry, itchy rashes that plague eczema sufferers. He said: ‘The skin has a protective barrier layer of lipids, around one eighth the thickness of a sheet of paper, that stops chemicals from getting into the body and keeps moisture in.

‘SLS is a detergent used to mix oils into water-based moisturisation creams to give a nice creamy texture. It’s also used widely in shower gels and other cosmetics. 'Our study has found that rubbing aqueous cream containing SLS into the skin thins this protective barrier, making the skin more susceptible to irritation by chemicals. So to use this cream on eczemous skin, which is already thin and vulnerable to irritation, is likely to make the condition even worse.’ The study was published in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Aqueous cream is the most widely prescribed moisturiser for dry skin conditions. It costs the NHS £1.86 for a 500g tub and is also available from pharmacies. The principal ingredients are liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin and purified water.

Margaret Cox, of the National Eczema Society, said the charity did not recommend aqueous cream as a moisturiser. Almost four million Britons have eczema, which is mainly treated with steroid creams. Many eczema sufferers give up using aqueous cream because they find it so irritating - a study in children showed 56 per cent experienced a 'stinging' sensation when they used it.

Children said it caused more discomfort than any other product - and the latest research suggests SLS is the reason why.

Use the pure sable brush to wash a base of Silver Dollar across the upper lid, working outwards, pressing the colour onto the skin. You might also like to apply a small amount below the eye in the outer corner, blending gently.

Step 2:

Take Brooklyn Black to add depth to the socket. Apply to the outer edges and blend into Silver Dollar. For additional drama, work the colour onto the upper lid, blending carefully. Press a small amount on the lower lid outer corners, onto the Silver Dollar but leave a hint of the silver shade showing below.

Step 3:

Take the black eyeliner, and gently pull the upper lid taut to ensure a smooth line. Start at the inner corner and draw a line as close to the lashes as possible. A thicker line will create a darker look, or a broader line from the centre to outer corner works really well.

Brits choose self-tanning over sunbathing

Many Brits are opting for self-tanning products instead of sunbathing this year, a shopping search engine has reported.

Searches for tanning lotions, sprays and mousses rose by 228% in May in comparison to the number recorded in April.

The change in consumer approach to achieving a sun-kissed glow is a result of bad weather and growing health concerns.

Eight out of ten sunbed users have increased their risk of skin cancer by approximately 75%, according to Cancer Research.

More than 1,800 of the 9,000 cases diagnosed with malignant melanoma each year die from the disease.

Summer is traditionally a time when demand for tanning treatments soar and 2010 is turning out to be no different to any other year, The Reef Salon and Spa reported.
Manager of the Maidstone business Clare Cockell said: “There is definitely a demand now that summer is approaching.”

About half of the customers that come to The Reef for spray tans are regular visitors.
“Most visit us very sporadically, depending on special occasions that come up,” Cockell said.
“But we do have a few clients that visit us possibly weekly or fortnightly that want a continuous tan without the damage of UV rays.”

Despite the increase in information about the potentially fatal and ageing effects of UVA rays, Twenga found consumer searches for tanning oil increased by 127% last month. Meanwhile demand for tan prolonger is up by 65% and searches for tanning pills have surged by 48%.

Johnson and Johnson - Criminal Penalties

U. S. Food and Drug Administration have confirmed that criminal penalties could be levied against the Johnson & Johnson’s division. It is responsible for a huge recall of pediatric medications.

The agency is mulling additional actions against the Company for its noncompliance which may include seizures, injunction or criminal penalties. The news was confirmed by Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, FDA's Principal Deputy Commissioner. The evidence collected so far indicated a lot of problems with the Company.

Due to flaws in manufacturing and quality-control procedures, more than 136 million bottles of liquid children's drugs, including Tylenol, Motrin and Benadryl were recalled on April 30. It is alleged that these medicines may have been full of inactive ingredients that failed testing, bits of metal or too much active ingredient.

This is not the first time such a recall has been ordered. This has prompted the lawmakers to question the Company’s integrity. It is also responsible for delaying reporting of problems to the FDA.

The agency has referred that latest case to FDA’s office of criminal investigation. This unit works closely with the Justice Department.Senators feel that the actions of the Company reveal that it is deceptive, dishonest and willing to put the health of children at risk. Health experts also feel that despite being such a big Company, it failed to act responsibly and enforce strict quality control.

Taming 'Afro Hair'

Afro hair can be notoriously difficult to tame but it's not a lost cause. Your hair may look frizzy and dull but you can counteract these complaints by following a haircare regime that flatters Afro hair.

Use targeted products
Haircare products that are specifically formulated for Afro hair are the best option as these are the best suited to your hair. These usually contain moisturising ingredients that care for Afro hair and prevent it from losing essential moisture.

Don't shampoo too often
Afro may look strong, but it's actually quite weak and won't respond well to being washed too regularly. Washing your hair too often strips its natural oils and makes Afro hair more brittle and prone to breakage. Washing your hair once a week will keep it clean without making it too dry and gives your hair chance to recover between washes.

Some women with Afro hair prefer to forgo shampoo altogether and wash their hair with a deep conditioner instead. This keeps your hair nourished without stripping away natural oils.

When you're washing your hair, take care not to let your hair get too tangled. Instead of piling your hair on top of your head when massaging in the shampoo, let your hair fall naturally and work the shampoo down the length of your hair.

Condition regularly
When it comes to keeping Afro hair looking and feeling good, intensive moisturising is essential. Afro hair tends to become dry very quickly so it needs to be kept as moisturised as possible. Intensive conditioning balms and leave-in conditioners can be good for adding moisture.

Whatever type of conditioner you choose to use, moisturise your hair twice a week to stop it becoming too dry between washes and to help you to detangle your hair more easily.
Hot oil treatments work well if they are left on for thirty to forty-five minutes on a monthly basis. You can increase the benefits of a hot oil treatment by heating a towel on the radiator and carefully wrapping this around your head as extra heat helps the conditioner to penetrate the hair shaft.

Detangling your hair
Always use a comb to detangle your hair as Afro hair will stretch if it's combed when wet. Separate your hair into small sections using a wide-toothed comb as this will cause the least amount of damage to your hair. Before you try to detangle your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner to make the detangling process easier and reduce the amount of friction.

Trimming the ends of your hair can go a long way towards making it easier to detangle. If Afro hair isn't getting enough moisture, the ends will be extremely dry and this can make it hard to get even a wide-toothed comb through your hair. Chopping off dry ends is often the easiest solution to this problem as the damage has already been done as far as the dry ends go and repairing this is a big ask.

Drying your hair
Leave your hair to dry naturally whenever possible as this will minimise heat damage. Try not to towel-dry your hair too often as rubbing the hair can damage it. Instead, blot your hair with a towel to remove as much excess moisture as possible and then leave it to dry on its own.

Styling your hair
If you're going to put your hair up, don't use elastic bands as these can easily damage Afro hair. Covered bands are better as they create less friction and are less likely to cause damage.

Other tips
If you want to help your hair to retain moisture while you're asleep, try using satin pillowcases as there will be less friction between your hair and the pillow.

Rosacea is on the rise in the UK

Rosacea affects one tenth of the UK population and that number is rising, says the International Dermal Institute.

However, knowing how to treat the condition could help therapists prevent a rise in incidences of the condition, as the weather gets warmer.

Sally Penford, Education Manager for The International Dermal Institute said: “As a global training institution, The International Dermal Institute sees thousands of therapists every year in training and the general opinion is that incidence is on the increase.”

“The warmer temperatures of summer can irritate and exacerbate the condition further and therapists are likely to find more clients suffering from the condition in coming months.”

Penford advised salons and spas to treat rosacea-prone skin as sensitised and avoid formulations including alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus oil, glycerine and heavy weight creams that increase heat in the tissues.

She said: “Try to introduce products that use botanicals such as aloe vera, liquorice, red raspberry and chamomile to help reduce redness.

“These skins would do well with manual lymphatic drainage to increase toxin removal from the tissues and reduce pustular activity.”

The inflammatory skin condition, defined as a vascular disorder, usually affects people between the ages of 30 and 50-years-old.

"Teen Toxing"

A consumer website about injectable safety has warned about the growing trend of UK school children seeking cosmetic injectable treatments.

The Physician’s Coalition for Injectable Safety has spoken out against “teen toxing” or the administration of Botox or other injectable products to individuals under the age of 18 for cosmetic reasons.
“This is a worrying trend that we are all beginning to witness,” said British Association of Cosmetic Doctors regional representative for the Republic and Northern Ireland Dr Patrick Treacy. “Western society has a long obsession with self-improvement.”

The trend gained much notoriety at the beginning at the beginning of March when an article on a mother injecting her teenaged daughter was released in The Sun. The mother first allowed her daughter to have the treatment on holiday in Spain when she was 15 and has since personally administered the treatment twice more.“With regards to the article, the mother is helping her daughter to develop a body dysmorphic disorder rather than providing common sense direction and responsible parenting,” said British Association of Cosmetic Doctors regional representative for Scotland Dr Simon Connolly.

Since the article’s printing, physicians, dermatologists and other practitioners of Botox from numerous countries have spoken out against the procedure for adolescents.
Cadogan Clinic consultant dermatologist Sandeep Cliff explained: “Often their skin is still developing and their features are still developing. I think to manipulate that at a young age is not a good practice at all.”

Aesthetic medicine professionals have said that the administration of Botox is not necessarily suitable for younger individuals. “The preventative benefits of Botox – its ability to prevent lines appearing – should only be contemplated about 12 months before wrinkles appear,” said Treacy. “There is no benefit otherwise and there may be complications of using a medicine with no perceived benefit for one so young. This is comparable to doing a face-lift of a 30-year-old to prevent her face sagging when she is 35.”

With treatments beginning earlier than usual, a teenage patient also runs the risk of becoming addicted to Botox treatments for a longer period of time. Repeat clients would normally be seen positively, but businesses are questioning whether the extra money made from hooking a teenager is worth it.

Cliff said: “Clearly, from the business perspective, it’s good for them, you have a client for life. But from a practical perspective and an ethical perspective, many companies are saying we’re not interested, that’s not what we’re involved with and that’s not what we’re here for.”

Cliff also believes that when an adolescent girl desires such an extreme measure as Botox, a physician may want to think about her motivation before scheduling a treatment.
“If you see a young girl that wants Botox, you really have to question why on earth she wants the injection,” he said. “Is there something going on that we can’t see?”

There are measures that young people should be advised to follow in order to maintain their youthful skin. Libby Eley, expert at Dove Spa explained: “Young girls would be much wiser to keep out of the sun and keep their skin moisturised. Healthy skin that allows the inner person to glow is attractive. Frozen faces in young skin are not attractive.”

US Senators accused of scaremongering over "cancer-causing" chemicals

Senators in Colorado asking the state to bring in legislation to combat “cancer-causing” chemicals in personal care products have been accused of scaremongering by a UK cosmetics expert.

Last month senator Betty Boyd and representative Dianne Primavera introduced the Colorado Safe Personal Care Products Act into the Colorado State Legislature. The proposed act would prohibit manufacturers from distributing or selling in Colorado “personal care products that contain known and probably carcinogens and reproductive toxins”. A fine of $5,000 to $10,000 would also be applicable to offending manufacturers.

The Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association director general Chris Flower said that the proposed act does not take into account the fact that regulations requiring cosmetics to be safe already exist in the US and stated that the senators’ action is scaremongering. He said: For a high-profile public figure to come out and say that some cosmetic products are causing cancer and action is needed seems to me to be scaremongering pure and simple.”

Flower added that UK consumers are well protected by the European Cosmetics Directive – now being recast as a Regulation – which requires all cosmetics to be safe; the company must assess and be able to demonstrate that the product is safe before it is marketed. “I don’t know how better consumers could be protected,” he said. “There is no balancing the benefits against the risk – cosmetics must be safe regardless.”

Personal care products are described in the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as “any article intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering a person’s appearance”.

Flower supported the government showing an interest in reassuring consumers that they are being protected but warned that there is always a risk that the interest can become more political than technical.

A hearing will be held for those supporting and opposing the act to have their say.

Higher Investment in Personal Care Companies

A sharp rise in investment activity involving natural personal care companies is expected in 2010.

According to Organics Monitor’s new Strategic Insights report, which looks at investments, mergers and acquisitions in the global natural personal care industry, improving economic conditions and easing of capital restrictions are making investors target this high growth sector once again.

Until the financial turbulence began in 2008 the natural personal care industry was a favourite of the investment community. However, Organics Monitor reports that after an 18-month lull period, major deals have restarted, for example, the acquisition of Bare Escentuals by Shiseido in a $1.7 billion deal and the completed purchase of Kibio by Clarins this month.

Organic Monitor director Amarjit Sahota said: “We would not say that natural personal care companies were resilient during the recession, however most companies continued to show growth in 2008 to 2009 albeit at lower growth rates than previous years.

Many companies were reporting growth of above 20% a year but experienced single-digit growth in 2008 and 2009. So we would say natural personal care companies were affected by the recession, but not as badly affected as other personal care companies.”

Organic Monitor predicts further deals as investors are once again pursuing natural personal care companies.

It said that investors are attracted by high market growth rates and profitable product categories and explained that European companies are expected to be involved in major deals in 2010 because of the lack of “investable” companies in North America.

The report stated that the most successful natural personal care companies are those that receive investment and continue to operate as separate entities. Aveda and Burt’s Bees are cited as such companies that have continued to show positive growth. In comparison, those that have been acquired and integrated into larger corporations have not realised their growth potential.

The statement from Organic Monitor said: “A major reason is that natural personal care companies are typically small enterprises with strong ethical values which do not always fit well into larger profit-driven organisations”.

Sahota added: “Increased investment in natural and organic personal care companies will benefit the professional beauty sector by giving more financing to brands that currently focus on this sector. This financing will provide capital for new product development, product improvements and ingredients. It will also provide capital to new start-ups that are developing professional beauty products and provide more funding for marketing and distribution to companies that supply salons and spas.”

Application Tips:
Face – Concealer – Apply using your ring finger. Pat on the skin and gently blend moving from the outside corner to the inside corner of the under eye area. Take special care not to stretch the skin!

Courts make ruling on Dr. Bronner’s organic lawsuit

California courts have upheld certain motions by the defending cosmetics companies in the amended federal lawsuit bought by Dr. Bronner’s that.

The judge chose to grant the motions filed by the defendents to dismiss for lack of subject-matter and failure to state a claim in favor of the defendants, headed by the Hains Celestial Group.

However, the California judgment deemed that Dr. Bronner’s motion to dismiss a counter claim filed by Ecocert, which certifies some of the beauty products in question, was granted.
Nevertheless, both Ecocert and Dr. Bronner’s have been given 30 days to amend their pleadings as the court deemed certain defects in the proceedings could be rectified through amendment.

The court ordered that any amendment plea should be filed by 13th January, 2010, while a case management conference is scheduled for February 12th.

Ongoing saga dating back to April 2008

The lawsuit was first filed back in April 2008 under the plaintiff name All One God Faith, doing business as Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, under the premise that its complicity to strict FDA regulations governing organic beauty products was not being met by its competitors.

Dr. Bronner’s claims that many of the leading organic beauty brands are not complying with the standards enforced by the FDA, in turn not complying with consumer expectations as to the definition of an organic certified product.

The natural soaps company originally brought the lawsuit against a number of players including Hains Celestial (Jason Naturals and Avalon Organics brands), Levlad (Nature’s Gate), Kiss My Face, YSL Beaute and the certification bodies OASIS and Ecocert.

In the original lawsuit Dr Bronner’s asked that the companies cease to market products with organic in the product name unless they meet USDA National Organic Program specifications, which it believes represents consumers’ expectations of the term organic.

However, last July the company upped the stakes and by asking for damages incurred through loss of sales to what it alleged were falsely advertised organic products.

Second amendment focused on mislabeling of organic products

In the second amended complaint presented at the San Francisco Superior Court, Dr Bronner’s is calling for the profits made from the sale of the defendants allegedly mislabelled organic products to be awarded to the company.

In addition, it asked for monetary compensation for the diversion of sales from Dr Bronner’s to the defendants.

Likewise the lawsuit also asked that certifiers OASIS and Ecocert should stop certifying products as organic if they could not be certified under the USDA national organic program.

Dark chocolate can help sun-protection but is not a sunscreen alternative

A study has revealed that a daily portion of dark chocolate could protect the skin against wrinkles caused by UV from the sun. However, experts advise that chocolate should not be considered an alternative to sunscreens.

The research, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology by researchers at private Harley Street clinic European Dermatology, involved 22 women with an average age of 42. For a three-month period, half the volunteers consumed a daily portion of 20 grammes of dark chocolate droplets that were very high in flavanols, the antioxidants that naturally occur in cocoa beans.

The rest of the volunteers ate chocolate that looked identical but had lower flavanol content. The volunteers were regularly exposed to controlled doses of UV light to assess how long it took before their skin became inflamed. The results revealed that among those on low-flavanol chocolate, there was no change in the amount of UV light tolerated by their skin. For those with the high-content chocolate, there was a significant improvement in the skin’s resistance to the sun’s effects.

Researcher and dermatologist at the European Dermatology London Dr Stefanie Williams, said that consumption of high-flavanol chocolate should not replace topical application of sunscreens but should be used as an additional measure to help protect skin. She said, “At the moment we would not advise people to replace traditional sunscreens with consumption of antioxidant foods such as high-flavanol chocolate, but these two measures work well in concert and can be used together.”

Nutritionist Carina Norris explained that she didn’t believe that the amount of flavanols in chocolate would “give you any photoprotection worth speaking of”.
She added, “Any slight effect would be negligible, compared to, say, the photoprotection from a sunscreen.”

Norris warned against advising the public to compare the consumption of chocolate to the protective benefits of traditional suncreens. She said, “As a nutritionist, I’d be very wary of promoting the photoprotective properties of flavanols, in case people think they can get away with going without sunscreen, simply because they’ve eaten some high-flavanol chocolate.”The health benefits of dark chocolate have been publicised for some time, however, Ailsa Higgins, senior nutritionist at Champneys in Tring, commented that consumption needed to be in moderation. She said, “Too much chocolate will make you fatter, and to get real health benefits you need to eat quite a lot, everyday.

“However, as part of a healthy diet, a couple of squares of dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa solids) can make a little contribution to your health and pleasure.”

Advice to drink eight glasses of water is not backed by evidence

A study has revealed that drinking eight glasses of water a day as traditionally advised may not have the anti-ageing impact originally suggested.

The Food for the Skin review by the British Nutrition Foundation, says that a balanced diet and sunscreen are more important in preventing the signs of ageing such as wrinkles and that there is no firm evidence to back up the theory that eight glasses of water should be consumed a day in order to maintain youthful, vibrant looking skin.

Dr Laura Wyness, senior nutrition scientist at The British Nutrition Foundation, confirmed that although water has been presented in the popular press as the secret to healthy glowing skin, the scientific evidence to support such a statement is lacking. “Water is essential for life; the human body is made up of between 45 to 75% water, depending on body weight,” she said.

“Drinking water has the advantage of fulfilling hydration requirements without providing additional energy or adversely affecting dental health. There is however, little scientific evidence on the effects of water consumption on skin hydration, and the influence of drinking more or less water on the appearance of skin.” She said that more research in this area is required.

Wyness added that water can be obtained from both food and various drinks, not just plain water consumption. “We obtain water from all the foods and drinks we consume. The body has sophisticated systems for getting rid of toxins, and it is not necessary to consume excess water or other substances to enhance this process,” she explained. “A universal water intake recommendation that is applicable to all individuals is difficult to define as there are many factors that affect an individual’s need for water, such as environmental conditions, changing physical activity levels of the individual, their age, gender and body mass.”

Although individuals need to drink enough water to maintain body fluid, other factors are more important for the condition of the skin according to Carina Norris, registered nutritionist. “For example, most skin ageing is caused by sun damage, so your first consideration regarding keeping your skin looking good should be a sunscreen, not a glass of water,” she explained.

However, she added that nutrition does play a role in how skin looks and that someone eats a poor diet it does show in the skin condition. Norris stated, “Vitamins A and C are particularly important. Vitamin A is involved in maintaining your skin as a 'barrier' to the outside world, and vitamin C is needed to make collagen, which is responsible for the skin's resilience, and resistance to wrinkling. Vitamin E is also thought to play a role in skin condition.”

Eating fruit and vegetables also remain important to skin health according to Norris. “Some of the best 'skin foods' are fruit and vegetables,” she commented. “They're rich in vitamin C, as well as beta-carotene, which the body can use to make vitamin A. Nuts and seeds are good too, as they contain vitamin E.”

European Natural Cosmetics - Sales Increasing

Natural & organic cosmetic sales continue to increase at a healthy rate in Europe, with revenues projected to increase by 13 % to 1.7 billion € this year. Organic Monitor forecasts sales revenues to approach 2 billion € in 2010. Organic Monitor’s 2009 edition of The European Natural Cosmetics Market Report finds that natural & organic cosmetic sales have been affected by the financial crisis. However, healthy growth is continuing because of increasing distribution and high consumer demand for chemically-clean and ethical cosmetics. The UK market has been the most adversely affected by the economic recession. The market growth rate has dropped from 16 % in 2008 to 8 % in 2009 because sales have been hit in organic food shops and health food retailers. However, natural and organic cosmetic sales continue to expand at double-digit rates in other European countries.

The French and German markets are the fastest growing in Europe. High growth rates are occurring as product penetration increases in mainstream retailers. Both countries have observed a large number of retailer private label launches in recent years. Certified natural and organic cosmetics have been introduced under private labels of supermarkets, drugstores, perfumeries, organic food shops and discounters in these countries. Private labels are so successful in Germany that they comprise over 10 % of total sales. Alverde has become the leading retailer private label of natural cosmetics in the world, having over 100 certified products across categories. Natural and organic products now comprise 3 % of total cosmetic sales in Europe. The market share is above 4 % in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. High growth in the German market is projected to raise the market share of natural and organic cosmetics to 10 % in the coming years. Apart from private labels, a major retailing trend is the growing number of concept stores for natural and organic beauty products. Dedicated stores are being opened by leading natural cosmetic brands, large retail groups as well as private investors. Most developments are in Paris where highly established brands such as Dr. Hauschka as well as large retailers like Monoprix are opening concept stores.

The European Natural Cosmetics Market Report, produced by continuously tracking the European natural and organic cosmetics market since 2003, finds the competitive landscape has changed significantly. High growth rates have been responsible for mergers, acquisitions and an influx of new entrants. Rising competition is leading natural and organic cosmetic brands to expand distribution outside traditional sales channels. This strategy has enabled the Swiss company Weleda to consolidate its position as market leader. With competition for retail shelf-space stepping up, Organic Monitor expects market winners to be companies who can successfully differentiate their products from competitors. After testing 306 shades from all 21 lipstick brands, Oeko-Test Magazine released a study in August 2009 that gave many lipstick manufacturers the "red card" (not good) for containing ingredients that could have long-term health effects.

All 13 Lavera Lipstick shades were awarded the highest ranking possible for not containing harmful ingredients found in other lipstick brands.

German-based Lavera Naturkosmetik, a leader in "truly natural" beauty and skincare products recently received a "Very Good" ranking from ÖEKO-TEST--the Consumer Reports of Europe--for its safe ingredients.

ÖEKO-TEST released a study of 21 different brands of lipsticks sold in department and drug stores to analyze their ingredients and to identify problematic or possibly hazardous ingredients. As part of the study, ÖEKO-TEST purchased a total of 306 shades from all brands and gave many lipstick manufacturers the "red card" (not good) for containing ingredients that could have long-term health effects.

As part of this study, ÖEKO-TEST found that the winners of this test were all certified natural cosmetic brands. Öeko-Test Magazine was started by a few journalists in 1985. Vitamin C - Vital role in repairing DNA damage

Vitamin C could have a vital role to play in repairing DNA damage, scientists have discovered.

Researchers from the University of Leicester and Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Portugal have found that the vitamin can improve wound healing and even work deeper in the skin to repair the damage done by free radicals to the cell’s DNA.

The team, comprising Tiago Duarte, Marcus S Cooke and G. Don Jones, tested a vitamin C derivative – ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AA2P) – to analyse the effectiveness of sustained exposure on human dermal fibroblasts. They then investigated which genes are activated by the vitamin C in the cells, which were found to be those responsible for skin regeneration.

“The results demonstrated that vitamin C may improve wound healing by stimulating quiescent fibroblasts to divide and by promoting their migration to the wounded area,” explains Tiago Duarte, who was previously at the University of Leicester and is now at the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Portugal. “Vitamin C could also protect the skin by increasing the capacity of fibrolasts to repair potentially mutagenic DNA lesions.”

Dr Marcus S Cooke, who is a senior lecturer in the department of cancer studies and department of genetics at the University of Leicester, believes these findings could have important implications for skincare companies, but advises against companies using these findings to make claims about their products.“It is perhaps worth noting that the medium we culture cells in can be thought of as analogous to plasma. The cells are bathed in a vitamin-containing liquid. The cells ‘decide’ how much vitamin C they need and can take it up to achieve a concentration in the cell greater than outside the cell. I think it is conceivable that these results could be achieved outside the lab but it would take a scientific study to prove this.”

Expensive eye creams slammed by Which?

Eye creams have again been slammed in a study conducted by Which? Magazine.

The test set out to determine if 13 eye products, ranging from a £3.21 Simple moisturiser used as a control to mass market and luxury brands, such as StriVectin-SD Eye-Cream (£47 for 40ml) to Clarins Advanced Extra-Firming Eye Contour Cream (£31.33 for 20ml) really worked on lines.

Testers were aged 35 to 65, and each cream was tested on between nine and 11 people during a six-week period.High-definition photographs were taken in laboratory conditions before use, an hour afterwards and six weeks later.

Five expert panellists evaluated the photographs and judged if there had been any visible improvement in wrinkle depth or length. Neither testers nor panellists knew which cream was being used.While some creams did convince their testers that the skin was softer and smoother, generally the report found that none of the creams worked on all the testers, and that often their comments did not tally with the panel’s findings. On the whole, the panel judged that Simple moisturiser worked just as well as more expensive creams, including the most expensive StriVectin offer.

Tracy Tamaris, Environ’s UK and Ireland training director said:”It doesn’t matter how much an eye cream costs, what is important is the formulation. There are ingredients with a sound scientific basis that can show dramatic improvements in skin, such as vitamin A, pentapeptides and growth factors."One or some of these may be included in both cheap and expensive eye creams but not necessarily in effective levels or combinations.

If the focus of ingredients is on simple hydration to smooth out wrinkles, then results will appear good but these are temporary. Products contain certain ingredients in effective concentrations could show better long term effects that reduce wrinkles and stimulate skin thickening with consistent use over time.”Dr Tamara Griffiths of the British Skin Foundation says the best laboratory evidence of deeper skin repair of coarser wrinkles has been associated with longer-term use of treatments containing retinoids, or vitamin A derivatives. Although they do say this is an expensive option and can irritate skin, and don’t necessarily offer the results “we are led to believe”.She says that consumers need to have realistic expectations, even with prescription products.

Philippa Canty, marketing manager for Thalgo, Terrake and Ella Bache, denies the claims that eye creams are style over substance. “When it comes to eye creams, as with other skincare products, you get what you pay for. Although lower-priced eye creams cited by Which? may claim to contain the same ingredients, this doesn't mean they contain the optimum concentration of those ingredients. What you're paying for with a higher priced eye cream from a brand like Thalgo, for example, is quality ingredients, a greater concentration of actives, and consequently better results.

Ultimately the consumer is concerned with results, especially if they are looking for an eye cream with anti-ageing benefits. There also tends to be less chance of irritation for the sensitive eye area with a higher-quality (and therefore higher priced) product.”Dr Patrick Bowler, cosmetic doctor and medical director of Court House Clinics disagrees: “Low-cost moisturisers will have an effect on wrinkles but only last hours. As soon as consumers stop using the product the wrinkles reappear. Retinoid creams and other cosmeceutical products induce long-term changes in the skin, not permanent of course, but last months not hours. Retinoids have a huge amount of data showing they work. Of course I agree that expectations have to be realistic…creams can only produce mild effects…don’t expect a cream facelift!”

Women ditching wine to preserve appearance, survey reveals

Women are forsaking alcohol to maintain their appearance, results of a recent survey have revealed. According to a poll carried out by research organisation YouGov, 73% of women between the ages of 25 and 34 claim to drink less than the recommended limit of 14 units. Meanwhile, 75% of 35- to 44-year-olds and, more surprisingly, 18- to 24-year-olds have made the same claim.

Being “constantly aware” of their appearance and behaviour were the reasons cited by 75% for backing away from the bottle. Not only is this a good decision, as far as swerving beer goggles is concerned, but it will help skin to avoid bearing the aesthetic brunt of continuous nights on the tiles.

Nina Goad, a spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists, said: “One of the effects of alcohol is to dilate the small blood vessels in the skin, which can make the skin appear redder, giving that ‘flushed’ look that is often associated with drinking. People who are already prone to blushing and facial flushing may notice that this worsens after drinking alcohol, even if they are not regular drinkers. Repeated reddening in this manner can also lead to thread veins. Likewise, alcohol also causes the tiny blood vessels on the surface of the eye to widen, making them more visible and resulting in bloodshot eyes.

“Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that it dehydrates the body by causing the kidneys to get rid of excess fluid in the form of urine. This dehydrates your body generally, including the skin, which is your body’s largest organ. This happens every time you drink alcohol. Alcohol is also thought to deprive the skin of certain vital vitamins and nutrients.”

Soap and detergent link to 40% eczema rise

Researchers say there is a likely link between the excessive use of modern soaps and detergents and a 40% increase in eczema cases in the past four years, reports the Daily Telegraph.

According to a research team at the University of Edinburgh between 2001 and 2005 there was a 42% increase in the number of eczema sufferers in England. The researchers, led by Professor Aziz Sheikh, said that they expected the number of sufferers to continue to rise.

The University of Edinburgh team say that the “frequency of bathing and use of soaps and detergents", may have contributed to the rise, along with better awareness and diagnosis.

The researchers fears were echoed by Margaret Cox, chief executive of the National Eczema Society, who said that the modern obsession with cleanliness could provide the clue to the increase in eczema cases. She told the Daily Telegraph: "Water use dries up the skin and soaps and detergents decrease the skin, We are using quite a lot of these products from an early age.

Therapists warned to take extra care as eczema incidences rise!

The number of people suffering from eczema has risen dramatically in the UK meaning therapists have to be even more thorough with hygiene and consultations. Between 2001 and 2005 there was a 42% increase in the number of people diagnosed with the condition, a paper published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine revealed.

The number of prescriptions issued to treat sufferers is believed to have increased by 57% and by 2005 it is estimated 5.7m people in the UK had eczema. With this condition on the rise, Habia has warned that therapists need to be even more conscientious when it comes to carrying out client consultations and cleaning equipment.

Wendy Nixon, health and safety manager for the organisation, said: “Eczema is not contagious but therapists have to take extra care when offering treatments because this condition makes the skin extremely sensitive. They may react quite violently to certain products. Also eczema can also mean the skin is broken more easily meaning there is more exposure to blood and bodily fluids. As they should with any client, all equipment should be thoroughly disinfected after a treatment is finished."

Nixon added that therapists themselves need to be careful they do not develop the conditions themselves. If they already have it they must take precautions to ensure it does not get worse. She said: “Something to highlight is that many therapists are likely to suffer from eczema and because they are continually cleansing, this could develop into occupational dermatitis.

Hairdressers are more likely to suffer from this than beauty therapists but they’re still up there in the top ten of professions to suffer from this skin complaint. I advise them to use a product that doesn’t contain perfume to wash their hands and always, always moisturise their hands afterwards.”

The reason behind this incidence surge is still unclear but most likely to be a down to several contributing factors. Helen Pugsley, a nurse and lecturer at Cardiff University’s School of Dermatology, said: “It’s probably a combination of lifestyle, family history and environment. I wouldn’t say this is a result of an increase in allergies because although eczema makes a person more sensitive to things, it is not a true allergy. Central heating means people are living in very warm homes, which makes skin dry and itchy meaning people will scratch it. Going from a warm house to the cold outside is also not good for the skin.

“There are also thoughts that we are cleaning ourselves too much. Every time you bathe, the skin is stripped of its natural oils and this leads to dryness. Also, if there is a strong family history of the condition people are more likely to have eczema.”

She advised: “People should turn down their central heating and moisturise. It should be a bit like brushing your teeth, once in the morning and again at night. I would say moisturiser is the main treatment.”

Hairspray may not be harmful to the male foetus, scientist claims

Baby boys born to mothers exposed to hairspray may not have a higher risk of having a genital defect, the leader of an alarming study published this week has said.

Research revealed working regularly in an atmosphere where the styling product was used frequently while pregnant could lead to hypospadias, it was reported.

However, Professor Paul Elliot who commandeered the study has clarified the chemical they believed to be harmful to male foetuses has not been used in the product since 2005, due to amended European Union regulations.

The Imperial College scientist, along with his team, found evidence suggesting phthalates could lead to the condition which results in the urinary tract being positioned away from the tips of the glans of the penis.

In the study, 471 women who gave birth to babies with hypospadias between 1997 and 1998 were interviewed alongside a group of the same number who gave birth to children without the defect.

Approximately double in the former set revealed they had been exposed to hairspray during their pregnancy.

While the chemical thought to be harmful is not in the product anymore, Professor Elliot still advises pregnant women to stay away from the aerosol styler.

He said: “We need to understand more about the chemicals in this product. For that reason, I would still say it is probably wise for expectant mothers to minimise their exposure to the product, particularly in early pregnancy. It is just part of maintaining good health while pregnant.

The EU regulations mean the phthalates we have concerns about have been removed from the product but I still believe protection should be taken.”

Habia’s health and safety department advises managers of salons using hairspray to undertake risk assessments for pregnant staff on site.

Salon owners who continue to sell an unlicensed tanning product could face two years in prison, a government watchdog has warned.

Following reports that injectable tan stimulator, Melanotan, is being retailed online and by salons and gyms across the UK, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has ordered vendors to remove the product from their shelves and websites. However, if they do not follow these instructions they could face a fine or worse. A spokesperson from the agency said: “If those selling the product continue we have the power under the Medicines Act to take action. We could prosecute them and they could end up spending two years in jail or receive an unlimited fine.”

The product contains a hormone that induces skin cells to produce more melanin but due to lack of research into its effects, Melanotan is currently unlicensed in the UK. The MHRA spokesperson said: “It shouldn’t be used because it has not gone through proper checks. We don’t know how safe it is, whether the manufacturer has good standards for production or even if it works.

She explained: "We don’t have any clinical data to show the short and long-term side effects. All we have is anecdotal evidence that the compound may increase the libido and therefore may raise the blood pressure. It also may suppress the appetite – we just don’t know. Very often the product is sold in powder form, which users need to mix with sterilised water, but this is prescription-only so we have serious safety concerns over this aspect of Melanotan too.”

Despite the negative press the Melanotan debacle has generated towards the tanning industry, Fake Bake owner Sandra McClumpha believes it will not do businesses selling legitimate products any harm. She said: “Something that is taken internally is potentially dangerous and has nothing to do with self-tanning products that are actually applied on the skin.

“No-one should inject themselves unless authorised by a doctor with anything, never mind a product not approved in this country. The salons that have been selling this illegal product should stop immediately. They have obviously been mis-informed but they have to realise the dangerous effects of this product and the damage that they can do to the reputation of their business.”

Industry backs nano-cosmetics

The beauty industry has defended the use of nanotechnology in the manufacture of cosmetics after its safety was called into question by a consumer watchdog.

A report published by Which? said “nano” particles were widely used in cosmetic products, such as anti-wrinkle creams and sunscreens, despite uncertainties about customer safety.Small Wonder? Nanotechnology and Cosmetics called for more research and tirals to be introduced, and for manufacturers to be obligated to clearly state which products use nano materials.

Nanotechnology manipulates atoms and molecules on a very small scale, more than 50,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair, to enable them to take on new properties.Many brands were cited in the report for their use of nanotechnology, including Agera skincare, which uses it to deliver peptides into the skin.

But Dr Mervyn Patterson, medical director of Eden Aesthetics, which distributes Agera in the UK, said many cosmetics using nano materials were subjected to greater tests than the “crude techniques” other products went through. “Agera has spent a decade researching this technology and the nano materials used in its products are tested on human skin cells in the lab and then the final product itself is tested again to ensure safety. I really don’t know what the fuss is about – you can never say something is 100% reaction-free but we are confident in the safety and benefits of our products.”

The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) said the cosmetics industry took its legal responsibility to supply only safe products very seriously. “Each and every cosmetic product supplied in the EU must have a rigorous safety assessment... taking into account every aspect of its manufacture, including size,” a spokesman said. “We are disappointed that Which? feels the stringent EU rules surrounding the manufacture and safety assessment of cosmetics are somehow not robust.”

However, chief policy advisor at Which? Sue Davies said although many nanotechnology applications could lead to revolutionary developments in cosmetics, until safety checks were obligatory “the simple fact is we just don’t know enough. The government must introduce a compulsory reporting scheme for manufactured nano materials so we are all aware – and only those that are independently assessed as safe should be allowed to be used in cosmetics,” she said.

The CTPA said it was working with cosmetics companies, European trade associations and the regulatory authorities to ensure comprehensive regulation of all cosmetic products.

Nano Particles In Cosmetics

Cosmetics companies are not taking sufficient steps to ensure cosmetic products containing nanoparticles are safe, according to the recent Which? report.

Of 67 firms approached, only eight submitted information on their use of nanotechnology. A common use of nanotechnology is in the addition of titanium dioxide or zinc oxide particles to sun screens. European experts have demanded more safety tests to investigate the effects of these on damaged skin, according to the Guardian.

Safety concerns over nanoparticles in cosmetics have already been raised by the Royal Society earlier. It called for independent safety assessments on all products containing nanoparticles. The society has also urged firms to declare their safety tests.

According to the chief policy advisor at Which?, the cosmetics industry needed to declare about how it was using nanotechnology. The government would have to introduce a compulsory reporting scheme for manufactured nanomaterials, and only those that were independently assessed as safe should be allowed to be used in cosmetics.

Butane, Isobutane and Propane: Propellants.

Health effects: Headache; breathing difficulties; mood swings; nausea, vomiting, dizziness; symptoms of drunkenness; high doses can cause convulsions and coma; symptoms of mild frostbite (numbness, prickling and itching under the arm) are also possible. These highly flammable volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) are popular with solvent abusers (note the warning on the can) because they produce a quick ‘high’ – however they can also produce quick death. VOCs also accumulate in human breast milk. While these particular propellants don’t destroy the earth’s ozone shield, they do contribute to the formation of ground level ozone, or smog, which can cause serious breathing problems.

Health Effects: Skin irritation; mental decline. Aluminium is absorbed through the skin and there is evidence that a lifetime’s use of aluminium-containing deodorants may lead to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Can cause cancer - In women, a combination of underarm shaving and aluminium containing deodorants has been linked to breast cancer. Aluminium salts are also linked to an increase in male breast cancer. This may be because they damage the DNA of breast cells and have a potential hormone disrupting effect. Spray formulations mean you inhale, as well as absorb these compounds. Inhaled aluminium has fairly direct access to the brain via the nasal passages and chronic occupational exposure has been associated with preclinical signs of Alzheimer’s.

14 butyl ether: Preservative, solvent, antibacterial.

Health effects: Skin irritant, neurotoxin. PPG-14 butyl ether is a relative of propylene glycol and potentially toxic to the kidneys and liver. In the US it is a pesticide component used in sprays to protect animals from flies, gnats and mosquitoes. It is poisonous in high concentrations and can enhance the skin penetration of other more toxic chemicals.

Alcohol: Emollient, moisturiser, stabiliser.

Health effects: can cause allergies or contact dermatitis.

BHT – butylated hydroxytoluene: Antioxidant.

Health Effects: Contact allergies/contact dermatitis. Cancer suspect. May cause reproductive defects. Once absorbed, BHT can accelerate the breakdown of vital nutrients such as vitamin D (which maintains immunity and healthy bones and teeth).

Parfum (Synthetic): Body odour mask.

Health effects: Skin irritation, allergic reaction; breathing difficulties (including asthma); headache (including migraine; dizziness, nausea. ‘Parfum’ is a collective name given to hundreds of different chemicals used to produce a fragrance in cosmetics and toiletries. Many of these chemicals are persistent (ie, they don’t break down in the environment and they accumulate in human tissue and breastmilk). Of the top 20 most common perfume ingredients, four – acetone, ethanol, ethyl acetate and methylene chloride – are classified as hazardous waste by the EPA. Other commonly-used chemicals in perfume include propylene glycol (see PPG-14 above); cyclohexanol, a central nervous system depressant; linalool, which can provoke depression, loss of equilibrium and respiratory disturbances; methyl ethyl ketone, toxic to liver and kidneys, irritating to eyes, nose, and throat; and formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. Spray formulations mean you – and those around you – inhale more of these toxic chemicals.

Distearate: Moisturiser, emulsifier, emollient and antioxidant. Adding PEG to a product will prevent moisture loss during storage. The lower the number the more liquid the product is.

Health effects: cancer – Polyethylene glycol (PEG) compounds can be contaminated with various carcinogens, including ethylene oxide, 1,4-dioxane and polycyclic aromatic compounds (including benzene, benz(a)pyrene, DMBA, and 1-nitropyrene) – potential breast cancer triggers. Neurotoxic - PEGs can be contaminated with heavy metals such as lead, iron, cobalt, nickel, cadmium, and arsenic, which are toxic to the central nervous system.

Choosing the Right SPF

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The higher the SPF number, the better protection against the sun's harmful UVB rays.
The SPF number lets you know how much longer you can stay out of the sun without burning. For example, if it takes 15 minutes for a person to burn, an SPF 15 will allow them to stay out in the sun 15 times longer without burning.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wearing an SPF of 15 or higher for maximum protection. SPF is available in factors from 2-60. Does highest mean the best protection? Not necessarily. An SPF of 50 only provides 1-2% more protection than an SPF30.

UVA and UVB Protection

The label of the sunscreen will indicate the UVA or UVB protection. UVA rays are responsible for the aging effect of the sun. However, overexposure to UVA rays can cause skin cancer.UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and skin cancer. Choose a product that has states "UVA/UVB" protection or has "broad spectrum" protectant.

Waterproof vs Water Resistant

If you are looking for a sunscreen to use while in the water, choose a sunscreen that is "waterproof" or "water resistant"."Waterproof" sunscreen should provide protection in the water for 80 minutes, while "water resistant" provides only 40 minutes of protection.

Many Babies Exposed to Chemicals

Evidence of phthalates found in urine after using shampoo, lotion and powder, study shows

MONDAY, Feb. 4 (HealthDay News) -- More than 80 percent of infants tested in a new study had been exposed to a potentially harmful group of chemicals known as phthalates.
Exactly what this means in terms of infant health isn't yet clear, however. Some animal studies have found these substances to be harmful to development, and one study on human infants found an association between exposure to a particular phthalate and male reproductive problems.
Because the exact effects on the developing body aren't known, the researchers suggest limiting the use of products that contain these chemicals in infants as much as possible. Baby lotion, baby shampoo and baby powder were all linked to phthalate exposure in the study.

"Right now, we still don't know the true long-term effects," said study author Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana, an acting assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Washington , Seattle . But, she added, it's probably a good idea to "decrease the amounts of products used, especially in newborns."

Phthalates are a group of widely used chemicals that make plastic softer and help stabilize fragrance in personal care products. These chemicals are found in children's toys, infant care products, cosmetics, food packaging, vinyl flooring, blood storage containers and more, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Exposure to phthalates occurs when you use a product containing them, from breathing household dust containing phthalates, from medical treatments like dialysis that use products with phthalates, and from living near a manufacturing facility that uses phthalates, according to the CDC.

Phthalates are banned from use in personal care products and in some toys in Europe .
For the current study, the researchers looked for nine different metabolites of phthalates in the urine of 163 infants born between 2000 and 2005. The reason they had to look for evidence of phthalate exposure in the urine is that it's difficult to measure exposure any other way because manufacturers aren't required to disclose all phthalates in their products.

"Right now, manufacturers aren't required to label them, so it's difficult to know if you're using a product with phthalates," explained Sathyanarayana.

Most of the infants studied -- 81 percent -- had detectable levels of phthalate metabolites. Because the researchers also asked the parents about which products had been used on the babies, they were also able to see an association between higher levels of phthalate metabolites and the use of baby shampoo, lotion and powder. Diaper creams and baby wipes didn't appear to increase the concentration of phthalate metabolites in the urine, according to Sathyanarayana.
Findings from the study are published in the February issue of Pediatrics.

"We believe that there is potential value in the study of metabolized phthalates. But we take great exception to any effort to draw unfounded conclusions that suggest human health risks are associated with the mere presence of very low levels of metabolized phthalates in urine," Marian Stanley, manager of the Phthalates Esters Panel of the American Chemistry Council, a plastics industry trade group, said in a statement.

"With phthalates in particular, there's good research in multiple animal studies that these compounds can be harmful. It's interesting that industry is willing to accept animal studies to introduce new medication, but when something is found to be harmful, industry says, 'Well, those studies were just done on rats,' " said Dr. Jonathan Weinkle, a physician at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh's Cancer Institute's Center for Environmental Oncology.
"If animals are useful models for things that are helpful, it's because their bodies are similar enough to ours. Animal models should be reliable for good and bad."

Both Weinkle and Sathyanarayana said that dose makes a difference. The greater the exposure, the greater potential for harm, which is why they recommend limiting the use of products containing phthalates if possible. Sathyanarayana said that phthalates are often contained in fragrances, so a product that's fragrance-free may also be phthalate-free, and she said there are products available that are labeled phthalate-free, but they're generally more expensive.

A recent book on a British self made billionaire who said “he would give all his money back for his health and youth” should make us realise that our health is our biggest asset. With things like cancer and many other diseases increasing at alarming rates, ‘just look at skin cancer’ . I am sure by now most of you are aware of the hazards our beauty products pose but thought I would post this article which was published last year as it sums up the main concerns and is a good reminder which chemicals to avoid.

Bath foam that triggers headaches. Shampoo full of cancer-causing chemicals. And shower gel that attacks your skin. As experts warn of the chemicals in our toiletries, we reveal the health hazards in your bathroom cabinet.

Bath products

These days, most of us don't use soap in the shower or bath. Instead, we lather up with bath foams, shower gels, facial washes and scrubs, all of which rely on complex detergents — often the same ones used in heavy industry — to wash away simple dirt.
The difference between soap and detergent is like the difference between cotton and nylon. Soap and cotton are produced from natural products by relatively small modification.

Detergents and nylon are produced entirely in a chemical factory. There is no difference between the detergents in your household cleaning products and those you use in your bath. It is simply a matter of concentration.

Bubble baths, which are highly fragranced, have the greatest potential to cause skin irritation, allergic skin reactions and headaches. In the U.S., they carry a health warning alerting users to the possibility of skin irritation and urinary tract infections.

Body washes essentially contain the same basic ingredients as bubble bath. Soaking in any bath product will prolong its contact with your skin, increasing the risk that chemicals will be absorbed. Both bubble baths and shower gels have the potential to penetrate the skin and lungs.

Your bubble bath is likely to contain potentially irritating detergents like sodium laureth sulphate and cocami-dopropyl betaine (the latter is also a penetration enhancer, allowing other chemicals to be more easily absorbed); preservatives such as tetrasodium EDTA, a potential irritant; and methylchloroisothiazolinone (both potential mutagens — substances that speed up gene mutation).

If it contains cocamide EDTA (or similar compounds ending with DEA, TEA or MEA) along with formaldehyde-forming substances such as bronopol, DMDM hydantoin, diazo-lidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea and quaternium-15, it is likely to contain cancer-causing nitrosamines. Studies show up to 93 per cent of toiletries and cosmetics contain these compounds.

Healthier options

Avoid bubble baths altogether and limit your use of shower gels. Stick to plain old soap instead. Vegetable oil and glycerine soaps are best. They foam beautifully and are made from enriching oils such as coconut, hemp and olive. They are usually unfragranced or scented with essential oils (check the label).

Deodorants

Antiperspirants and deodorants typically contain moisturisers, solvents and preservatives (such as parabens, which can cause skin irritation and can be a source of weak oestrogens, which may have a detrimental effect in the long-term).
They contain synthetic perfumes and antibacterial agents such as triclosan (which can be absorbed through the skin and has caused liver damage in animal experiments).

Researchers at the University of Reading recently found traces of parabens in every single tumour sample taken from a small group of women with breast cancer.
The aluminium content of antiperspirants is also a major concern. No one knows exactly how aluminium compounds work to reduce underarm wetness. What is known, however, is that aluminium is absorbed through the skin.

The recently acknowledged link between Alzheimer's disease and aluminium has raised a furious debate over the safety of putting aluminium compounds into deodorants.
Another concern is the potential link between aluminium and breast cancer. A study looking at the incidence of breast cancer among 400 American women suggests that a combination of underarm shaving and deodorant use may allow chemicals to seep into breast tissue.
In the study, women who shaved three times a week and applied deodorant at least twice a week were almost 15 years younger when diagnosed with cancer than women who did neither.

Healthier options

Avoid aerosols, which surround you with a cloud of toxic chemicals. Switch to a solid or stick deodorant instead. This is less likely to aid the absorption of ingredients into the skin. Never apply antiperspirants or deodorants to broken or newly-shaved skin.
Many health food shops sell aluminium-free deodorants based on plant extracts or mineral salts, both of which can be very effective.

Shampoo

Cheap or expensive, modern shampoos are usually a mixture of the same handful of detergents. The choice of detergents used is usually as much to do with the final look of the product as it is with its effectiveness.
Unfortunately, rather like bubble bath, some of the common ingredients in shampoos can break down into formaldehyde during storage.

When formaldehyde-forming agents mix with some of the other emulsifying ingredients commonly found in shampoos, such as diethanolamine (DEA), triethanolamine (TEA) and monoethanolamine (MEA), they can form carcinogenic n-nitrosodi-ethanolamine, or NDELA.

This is particularly problematic in shampoos because we use them so frequently and in such great quantities.
Read labels. All shampoos need to contain some detergent, but look for one with the fewest ingredients to limit your exposure.
Use less — half the amount of shampoo you'd usually use. Always tip your head well back when rinsing to avoid getting shampoo into your eyes.

Shaving cream and foam

There are a wide variety of shaving creams and foams for men and women. They look nice, feel nice and smell nice. But they can contain some not-so-nice ingredients.
For example, triethanolamine (TEA) and lauramide DEA can mix with other chemicals during storage to form carciogenic compounds and propellants such as isobutane and propane — which have been linked to headaches, breathing difficulties, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

Get hair thoroughly wet before shaving so you use less foam.
Try shaving soap. It'll still be a detergent - unless you buy it from a health food shop — but at least you'll avoid the solvents and propellants in shaving foam. Or try a vegetable -based shaving oil (not a mineral-based one).
